Why This Listing Exists
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was an American gangster and businessman who attained notoriety during the Prohibition era as the co-founder and boss of the Chicago Outfit. His seven-year reign as a crime boss ended when he went to prison at the age of 33.
Capone's organization was responsible for bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, and racketeering. He maintained his power through brutal violence, most infamously the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre in 1929, where seven members of a rival gang were lined up against a wall and executed by men dressed as police officers.
Despite his public persona as a "modern-day Robin Hood" who ran soup kitchens, Capone was a ruthless criminal who ordered the deaths of dozens of people. He corrupted local officials and police, creating a lawless environment in Chicago where violence was the primary currency.
Capone was eventually brought down not for murder, but for tax evasion. He was convicted in 1931 and sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. During his time in Alcatraz, his health deteriorated due to neurosyphilis, and he was released in 1939.
He died in 1947 at his home in Florida, his mind ravaged by disease. His grave stands as a reminder of a violent era in American history and the inevitable downfall of those who build their empires on blood and corruption.
