Get DirectionsThe "Beast of Ukraine" died of heart failure in prison, which is far too peaceful for a man of his caliber. He was buried in an unmarked grave, likely in the prison cemetery. He claimed to be a "robot" driven by a higher power, but in the end, he rusted away just like everyone else.
It's a bleak spot for a bleak man. The lack of a marker ensures that his name will eventually be swallowed by the earth, leaving nothing but dirt.
Cold and forgotten. It's a place where memory goes to die. Perfect for a moment of silence, not for him, but for the silence he silenced.
Anatoly Onoprienko was a Ukrainian serial mass murderer who killed 52 people between 1989 and 1996. Known as "The Terminator" and "The Beast of Ukraine," he would enter isolated houses and massacre entire families, including children.
Onoprienko claimed that he was commanded by voices to kill and that he was part of a superior species. His spree caused widespread terror across Ukraine, leading to one of the largest manhunts in the country's history.
He was captured in 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment, as the death penalty had been abolished. He died in Zhytomyr Prison in 2013 from heart failure.
His burial in an unmarked grave ensures that he receives no glorification. He remains a symbol of senseless violence and the darkest capabilities of the human mind.
