Why It's a "Must-Go"

Carl Panzram, the man who famously said, "I wish the whole human race had one neck and I had my hands around it," is buried in the United States Penitentiary Cemetery. He got his wish of leaving this world, but he's stuck in a prison graveyard forever.

It's a stark, disciplined environment. Panzram hated authority, so being buried in a government plot is the ultimate cosmic joke. Feel free to laugh; he can't hear you.

The "Experience"

Regimented and secure. It's a prison cemetery, so don't expect a warm welcome. But knowing that the angriest man in history is finally quiet makes it worth the trip.

Why This Listing Exists

Carl Panzram was an American serial killer, rapist, arsonist, and burglar who claimed to have committed 21 murders, over 1,000 sodomies, and thousands of burglaries. His life was a continuous cycle of violence and incarceration.

Panzram was unrepentant to the end, spitting in the face of his executioner and demanding they "hurry it up." He was hanged at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary on September 5, 1930.

He is buried in the prison cemetery, Row 6, Grave 24. His grave is a simple marker for a man whose rage knew no bounds.
